10am to 2.30pm

John of the Cross and the Dark Night of the Soul

Our presenter Ron Lang first became interested in the subject of the ‘dark night’ when a mentor self-disclosed that he might be going through one. It sounded ominous, almost frightening, but at the same time, intriguing. Later, when Ron was training to become a spiritual director, he heard that many people in the second half of life experience a ‘dark night of the soul’ and are looking for someone who understands and can guide them through this spiritually obscure time. Ron was prompted to further study and was introduced to St John of the Cross, a Carmelite monk who lived in the late 1500s, who points out God’s invitation to us to live a life free of attachments, on a pathway through this dark night.

Ron and family worked with refugees in South Asia for a number of years before moving back to NZ. Recently retired from teaching English, Ron gives spiritual direction and has been increasingly involved in hospital chaplaincy.
